Event Description

We Are The Ones We’ve Been Waiting For presents the artists, agitators, organizers and educators--the radical culture-makers who teach and make art to cleanse, enchant, and re-imagine this world. From San Jose to the East Bay, this cross-genre reading brings the collective voice of writers doing the important work of bringing the light to our communities. 

Curator: Suzy Huerta

Suzy Huerta is a community college professor and poet. She is a VONA alumna and currently has the honor of hosting the monthly reading series Oakland Crossroads at Studio Grand every last Tuesday of the month.

Host: Denise Benavides

Denise Benavides is an Oakland based Queer Xicana Poet, Performance Artist (Bruja) and Radical Educator. She has a collection of poetry titled, Riot Girl forthcoming in the fall by Kórima Press.

Liz Mayorga

Liz Mayorga is a working-class, Xicana artist from LA. A former Director of the San Francisco Zine Fest, she’s worked with youth programs and lead workshops to encourage kids find a creative outlet. 

David Maduli

David Maduli is an alumnus of the VONA and Las Dos Brujas writing communities. He was awarded the Joy Harjo Poetry Prize in 2011. A veteran public school teacher, he completed his MFA in Creative Writing at Mills College as a Community Poetics Fellow.

Asha Sudra Finkel

Asha Sudra Finked is an artist, educator, and revolutionary. From LA, she has worked for the non-profit Playworks in East-Oakland, was a community organizer for workers/tenant rights, anti-police brutality, and anti-domestic violence. Her passion for social justice focuses on educating youth.
