Oakland’s five 2016 Youth Poet Laureate Finalists will perform. Then one of these talented teens will be named our next Laureate! Join Youth Speaks and the Oakland Public Library to hear their voices, their truth, and prepare to be inspired.

Lucy Flattery-VicknessLucy, 17, is a poet, athlete, musician, white ally, social justice warrior, future educator and big sister. Poetry is her way to reach out and touch people, to connect truths.

Nandi MaunderNandi, 15, started writing poetry when she was eleven because she wanted to shed light on not just the darkness in her life, but the darkness in this world.

Azariah Cole-ShephardAzariah, 18, is a mentor, tutor, and advocate for youth facing struggles like hers. Poetry is important to her because it is a unique way to articulate truth and educate.

Emma TalamantesEmma, 17, is a poet, essayist, volunteer, advocate and editor in chief of Enizagam. Writing allows her to both heal and discover new things about herself and her surrounding world.
