Event Description

Curator: Peggy Simmons

 Oakland's most talented young poet leaders will be offering their words of insight, passion, and justice at this showcase. Lucy Flattery-Vickness, the 2017 Oakland Youth Poet Laureate, will be joined by other Laureates and Finalists from throughout this six-year-old program brought to you by Oakland Public Library and Youth Speaks.
Peggy Simmons is a Library Assistant at the Oakland Public Library where she has the honor to co-organize the Oakland Youth Poet Laureate program with Youth Speaks.

Lucy, 17,  is a poet, athlete, musician, white ally, social justice warrior, future educator and big sister. Poetry is her way to reach out and touch people, to connect truths.

Miles de Rosa

Miles de Rosa, 16, attends Oakland School of the Arts. He is an active protester, especially since the last presidential election, writes and performs slam poetry and writes for the school paper.

Lilah Mottley

Lilah Mottley, 15, attends Oakland School of the Arts,  is a published poet, writes for her school's online newspaper and received the silver key awards from the Scholastic Art and Writing regional contest.

Lizette Navarro

Lizette Navarro, 15, attends Skyline High School,  is a Mexican-American who’s lived in the Bay Area her whole life and has received the Latino Student Honor Roll Award every year since middle school.

Euna Bonovich

Euna Bonovich is a decolonial artist and poet based in the Bay Area. Their work explores memory, trauma, and performativity. They are an Ethnic Studies major at Mills College

Stephanie Yun is a non-binary artist/educator of the Korean diaspora. They were Oakland's first Youth Poet Laureate and currently work at the Oakland Public Library and at 826 Valencia as a BAYAC AmeriCorps member.

Bayleaf Wilson

Bayleaf Wilson, 16, is a student at Oakland School of the Arts, a creator and artist. They love poetry because it can be left alone or added to. It's versatile and open for everyone to explore.
